The Death Man

The name Dead Man is standing for one of the most violently contested heights at the western bank. One still finds numerous trenches and shelters in this with funnels and craters covered area. This height, which was suitable outstanding as point of observation and position of the artillery, was scene of long and hard fights over a few months in dirt and mud in poor funnel positions.

From Verdun follow the D 38 toward Thierville. Turn to the left in Charny on the D38 toward Marre.
To 2 km again left on the D 38 to Chattancourt, in the place half right drive. After approximately 1500 m you reach the visitor parking place.






Follow the trail at the parking place, after a few hundred meters you will find on the left side a remaked trench with explanation boards.




Follow the way straight ahead and you will reach the height 286. From that point you have a look to north at the ravens forest after that follows the valley of the Forges beck. On the right side opened the ravin of Caurette, inside the former entrance of the Gallwitz tunnel.

The height 304

The height of 304 attaches directly west to the dead man and was likewise a favourable position range for the artillery. Likewise heavy contests show themselves still today the old position systems.

The start to Chattancourt is equal with to the dead man. In Chattancourt follow the road toward Esnes en Argonne. Behind the place, before which, right bend French soldier cemetery and follow the fastened road up to the crest. There you find on the right side a way which to the monument leads.

The height 304 was the highest point on the left bank of the Maas and gave excellent possibilities for surveillance and as position for artillery. A path which seperate the lots 221 and 222, direct to the first german line. But it is difficult to recognize these.

On the road which guides from Esnes to Malancourt, you will find after 400 meters behind the gateway to the monument on the right side a picnic place. There you have a good look to the old trenches.
